Dangers of Self-Treatment for COVID-19

Man self medicating due to covid 19

After news of a California couple taking treatment into their own hands with devastating outcomes, we wanted to provide some information on drugs that are currently under FDA investigation for the treatment of COVID-19.

Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) and chloroquine (Aralen) are two potential therapeutic options for COVID-19. These medications have been around for years and are used to treat patients with malaria and/or arthritis. More recently, high demand for these agents has, unfortunately, caused a shortage in supply. Manufacturers are increasing their quantity and availability of these medications.

Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are still under investigation by the FDA, and their prescribed doses and frequencies may vary from other known indications. Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine should only be prescribed under the supervision of a physician. There are numerous side effects and potential drug-drug interactions that cause potential harm.   Physicians need to monitor for cardiovascular and hematological side effects upon initiation and closely thereafter.

CompleteRx does not advise self-treatment or self-medicating. Please do not take treatment under your own hands and/or use alternative forms of these drugs to treat yourself. If you believe you have been exposed or have COVID-19, consult your physician or seek emergency care if you have shortness of breath.
