The school of pharmacy at the University of Puerto Rico was opened in 1913, at that time called the department of pharmacy. It is the oldest school dedicated to training healthcare professionals in Puerto Rico. It was originally on the Rio Piedras campus of the University of Puerto Rico. In 1977, due to increased emphasis in clinical experience for pharmacy students, the school of pharmacy moved to the Medical Sciences Campus in San Juan.
The school of pharmacy offers several different types of degrees. They have a four-year Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The program does not require a degree to enter, but there are requirements of certain classes that must be completed to be accepted.
The school also offers a Master of Science degree. There are two options for the MS. You can study either Pharmaceutical Sciences or Industrial Pharmacy. This program is not currently accepting students. It is being reviewed and revised. The program may have a significantly different structure after the revision is completed.
For those who have already obtained a PharmD degree, the school offers a one-year residency program as well. The goal of the program is to prepare students for advanced graduate studies, academic positions, or advanced pharmacy positions. The program is offered in partnership with the VA Caribbean Healthcare System.
The school of pharmacy at the University of Puerto Rico has long been the only institution in Puerto Rico offering entry-level degrees in pharmacy. It was only in 2001 that other institutions began come to compete. This means that a large percentage of pharmacists in Puerto Rico were educated at the University of Puerto Rico.
The School of Pharmacy is also the home to the Chemical Forensic Laboratory. This is a state-of-the-art doping lab, and it is the first one of its kind to be found within Puerto Rico. This school of pharmacy has a lot of “firsts” and “onlys” to its name.
