About the Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy: Putting Excellence First

The Raabe College of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University has a strong commitment to meeting the highest standards of pharmacy education. With a focus on providing highly competent pharmacy professionals to the state and the country, more than one third of all pharmacists in Ohio are graduates of this program. The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program concentrates on patient-centered care in which pharmacists play an essential role, especially regarding drug selection and monitoring processes. The program qualifies graduates to obtain licenses in all 50 states and for a variety of career tracks, residency programs, and specialties.

The pharmacy profession has changed significantly over the years and pharmacists are now taking a more active role in the healthcare delivery system. Pharmacists often are critical points of contact for patients who require counseling and education. This enhanced role mandates a changed approach to pharmacy education.

The center of the program at Ohio Northern is a comprehensive pharmacy skills center and simulation laboratory that allows students to apply their didactic learning in an experiential setting. The laboratory occupies about 2,400 square feet and contains pods to simulate compounding and patient counseling. The facility’s design allows faculty to observe and evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback.

In the first 3 years, students take both general education courses and courses required for the initial years. They also learn about pharmacy as a profession and about the role pharmacists play in the healthcare continuum. In the remaining years of study, students concentrate on pharmacy courses that prepare them for a final year of rotations in advanced practice settings.

The school is ACPE accredited and offers post-graduate and transfer enrollment. Pharmacists teach many classes and the faculty also conducts research, assisted by students. The program also has a strong experiential component, with learning sites available in 40 states and several foreign locations.
