University of Toledo College of Pharmacy: A Commitment to Excellence

The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy was the first college created by the university. The college has a strong tradition of and commitment to student-centered education. Over its 105-year history, the college’s goals have focused on excellence in patient care, research, and community service. The college’s mission centers on educating students to “meet the pharmaceutical needs of society, to advance pharmaceutical knowledge through research, and to serve the profession and the community.”

Featuring state-of-the-art facilities, the college of pharmacy’s well-known and highly respected pharmacy practice lab allows students to gain real world experience in a modern, full-featured pharmacy simulator. In 2010, the college will move to a new location on the university’s health science campus.

The college, founded in 1904, has about 1,500 students, which is double the number from 10 years ago. An innovative feature of education at the college is its pharmacy partnerships that give students unprecedented access to career opportunities in pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences. The program also has an international component that centers on research opportunities by way of partnerships with North Sichuan Medical College in China, the University of Szeged in Hungary, and other institutions.

The College of Pharmacy has received more than $1 million in grants for research and development activities. Over 90% of the students in the pharmacy program successfully complete the program and graduate. An impressive 99% of students pass the Pharmacy Board of Licensure exam the first time they take it. In addition, 100% of the students who sit for the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination pass it the first time. The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program has had a 100% job placement rate for over 50 years.

The college is truly a “practitioner’s school” because students readily adapt from the educational setting to the professional practitioner setting upon graduation.
