UIC College of Pharmacy Offers 150 Years of Excellence

The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy was founded over 150 years ago in 1859. It stands as one of the oldest departments in the university. In addition, it is among the largest universities in the country when it comes to research. There are over 80 faculty members offering one-on-one attention for more than 160 graduate students in any given class. These faculty members are highly skilled in clinical or research areas or both. Normally there will be about 650 professional students all together.

Furthermore, four major departments make up the college of pharmacy. They are Pharmacy Practice, Pharmacy Administration, Biopharmaceutical Sciences, and Medicinal Chemistry & Pharmacognosy. There is such a vital need for pharmacists in Illinois that the new Doctor of Pharmacy Program at Rockford will be opening up for its first class in 2010. This new college of pharmacy was constructed to help fill the need for pharmacy professionals. The UIC College of Pharmacy is located right in the middle of the Health Sciences Campus in Chicago.

In addition, the UIC College of Pharmacy celebrated its 150th anniversary last year. This public university interviewed around 300 prospective applicants for the 2009 fall semester. Interviews do not guarantee enrollment and therefore only about 160 applicants were accepted. The 2009 class was made up of 65% men and 35% women. The average grade point average for students accepted was 3.40. The minimal grade point average for acceptance is 2.75.

To be considered, all interested applicants must have 60 semester hours of credit before they can apply for the four-year professional PharmD program. Applicants must complete the Pharmacy College Admissions Test and the scores must be sent to PharmCAS. All transcripts, letters of reference, and the main application must be sent to PharmCAS as well. The supplemental application must be filled out and sent to the college of pharmacy at UIC.

The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy is rich in history and character. The tradition and integrity of this educational facility make it a strong choice for those seeking a pharmacy career.
