Very often, a pharmacist is the healthcare provider most patients look to for assistance with their medications. Pharmacists help patients manage their medications and counsel them about the right ways to take them effectively. For people who want to serve others and who have a strong interest in science, a career in pharmacy is worth considering.
Pharmacists are in high demand all over the US, and the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy has a long tradition of excellence in pharmaceutical education. The program is flexible and resilient enough to respond to changes in both the social and professional frameworks; it provides an education that satisfies today’s needs as well as looking toward the future. The faculty is distinguished and fully engaged in preparing students to meet the challenges of careers in pharmacy. Many faculty members also are active researchers searching for cutting-edge solutions to complex issues in pharmaceutical science.
The program requires two years of foundational courses that form the framework for the professional courses in subsequent years. To complete the program, students spend their final year in experiential pharmacy rotations at locations in the state, country, or even foreign countries. During their time in the program, students learn the skills they need to practice as pharmacists, researchers, teachers, or other professionals in the field.
Graduates of the program manage or own community pharmacies or manage pharmacies in national chains. Pharmacists also work in hospitals where they assist doctors and implement and manage patient medication programs. In mental health settings, pharmacists insure that patients receive the medicines they need to help them lead functional and healthy lives. Graduates who wish to work as pharmacists in public health can find jobs in federal, state, or local governmental entities and agencies.
