The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, or RPSGB, is responsible for the practice of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in England, Wales, and Scotland. It is also one of the oldest professional pharmacy bodies in the world. Founded in 1841 by some of the leading chemists in London at that time, it was granted a royal charter in 1843 and has been held in incredibly high esteem ever since. However, although it has existed for more than a century, the changing nature of medicine has forced a change to its current role of leader and regulator of the pharmacy industry.
According to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Of Great Britain’s website, the “…primary objectives of the Society are to lead, regulate, develop and represent the profession of pharmacy.” This is definitely a role it has been doing well for quite some years now. By setting the quality of care standards in England, Wales, and Scotland and enforcing the legal and political policies that it determines as and when necessary, the pharmacy profession in Great Britain is undoubtedly one of the world’s leading bodies.
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society Of Great Britain does liaise with government bodies, charities, interest groups, and various other bodies that are associated with the pharmacy field but it also helps its members by providing continuing education, conferences, and contact lists that allow individuals to not only improve their career prospects but also to offer some of the highest quality patient care and safety standards in the world. Although the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Of Great Britain is set to change into a General Pharmaceutical Council in 2010 following the 2007 publication of a government white paper entitled “Trust, Assurance and Safety – The Regulation of Health Professionals in the 21st Century,” the foundation has been established and the care available will improve as a result.
