Every parent knows how important it is to take care of their child’s health, and an unlucky minority will know how frustrating and heartbreaking it can be to find out that your child has an illness that may jeopardize his or her life. However, not knowing is worse and some illnesses are difficult to diagnose. Take brain cancer, for example. According to Science Daily, it is the leading cause of death in children that have cancer at the moment and it is also one of the most difficult to diagnose. However, researchers at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI), which is a part of the University Of Utah, have uncovered information that may well lead to a more accurate diagnosis of brain cancer.
Respected researchers and medical professionals, including Joshua Schiffman, MD, examined tumors in brain cancer pediatric patients with a view to linking tumors from various stages based on their genetic makeup. This has been particularly problematic in the past because cancers between patients could not be linked, although there was information available on which to build: "Researchers already know cancerous tumors often lack certain copies of genes. They also know certain cancer-promoting genes are mutated in cancer patients." Well, Schiffman and his colleagues were finally able to prove that the two were simultaneous in children’s brain cancer cases.
The HCI research has been incredibly revealing and could lead to the correct diagnosis of millions of pediatric brain cancer cases around the world. By identifying the characteristics of tumors at different stages, it may now be possible to note the characteristics and genetic traits in tumors in the future to make sure that the stage of development of the cancer is accurately noted. This will undoubtedly lead to better practices and treatments in the future. Hopefully, it will also lead to a greater survival rate on account of individual treatments.
