It may seem unbelievable, but the number of Hepatitis A cases diagnosed in children continues to be on the rise. Studies show that many children that are on the go and that travel often with parents are at high risk. One way to lower that risk is to get more children immunized against Hepatitis A.
This immunization can be given to a child when he or she reaches 12 months of age. For Hepatitis A immunizations to be the most effective, many doctors recommend getting them before the child turns 24 months of age. Hepatitis A in children is serious because it can affect the overall functioning of the liver. If the liver isn’t working properly, then a child’s body isn’t able to get the nutrients from food like they should.
Hepatitis A in children can also prevent the liver from eliminating toxins from the body. As a result, it can end up poisoning their blood. This type of health concern is quite contagious and that is why young children are vulnerable. For some children, the symptoms may cause the child to become mildly ill for a few weeks and the parents just think it is the flu or due to teething. Other children may become severely ill from this illness and the problems can last for several months.
If you have a young child that is already experiencing health problems, then Hepatitis A can be a very serious problem for them to overcome. With more parents becoming informed about Hepatitis A in children, the number of vaccinations has increased from 1% to 15% last year.
Many medical professionals are encouraging more and more parents to consider the vaccination for their children. Because of the importance of immunizations, medical professionals are putting fliers and posters in waiting rooms so that parents can get the basic information that they need. Most parents are willing to pay for the additional vaccination to save their child from experiencing such a serious illness. Yet there are still too many parents out there that don’t have the information that they need about Hepatitis A in children so they don’t pursue the proper vaccinations to prevent the problem.
The benefit of all of the new publicity is that as the number of children getting the Hepatitis A vaccine increase, the overall number of cases is going to go down. There is still a great deal of work to be done to spread the word out there so that children on the go will be protected.
Due to the risk of hepatitis A in children, many preschools and child care facilities are asking parents to take action. They certainly don’t want to see an outbreak of this serious health problem going on in their location.
It is possible that one day the Federal government will add the Hepatitis A vaccinations to the list of those required for children to go to day care and entering school. The goal is to wipe out the cases of this health concern entirely. With more cases being seen than in the past, it is up to parents to take action to protect their children.
