Texas Southern University was established in 1947 in Houston, Texas. Originally the school was called Houston College for Negroes, which then became Texas State University for Negroes before obtaining its current name. The University emphasizes the importance for eduction for minorities. About 85 percent of the current students are African-American, and the university is trying to increase its Hispanic enrollment levels.
The School of Pharmacy was established in 1949. In 1983 the school was merged with the Department of Health Sciences, and they became the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The college offers several different degrees. They offer an entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy degree as well as a post-baccalaureate program for the degree. They also offer BS, MS, and PhD degrees.
The entry level PharmD program is a six-year program. The first two years of the program are called pre-professional years. If students don’t maintain certain standards throughout this period, they will not be allowed to advance to the four professional years of the program. Students may also complete the pre-professional requirements at a different college. The six-year program ends with a year of practical education, through six-week rotations with various onsite practitioners. The post-baccalaureate program takes two years to complete, and has four sections: didactic course work, professional practice experiences, seminars, and investigational research projects. The PharmD degree prepares students for a career in pharmacy.
The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences offers BS degrees in Environmental Health, Health Administration, Health Information Management, Respiratory Therapy, and Clinical Laboratory Science. Several graduate degrees are offered as well: an MS in Health Care Administration or a MS or PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
