The University of Rhode Island is the main public research university in the state. It was originally established in 1892 as an agricultural school. The first class had only 17 students. The university now has nearly 20,000 students. In 1909, the name was changed to Rhode Island State College (from the previous Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts) and it widened its focus to include other subjects. It became the University of Rhode Island in 1951 and began to offer doctoral degrees.
The University of Rhode Island has several campuses throughout the state. The College of Pharmacy is located at the main campus, in the village of Kingston. The rural location of this campus is rather unique, because pharmacy programs are frequently offered only in urban areas. The town of Kingston is a historic village, located within a slightly larger city.
The college of pharmacy offers several different types of degrees, including a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Their program is a six-year course of study that does not require pre-requisite college work. They also accept transfer students who completed their first two years at another university and transfer in for the final four years of the program.
The PharmD program can also be combined with several other programs to earn a joint degree. They offer a joint program to get a PharmD and an MBA. You can also get a Master of Science degree while pursuing the PharmD program. There is also a joint program to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in French. There is an exchange program set up with a hospital in Rennes, France, where you can study French and pursue the PharmD program at the same time.
The school also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and several MS and PhD programs. These programs focus on Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics, or Pharmacology and Toxicology.
