The mission statement of the Shenandoah University Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy reads: “To stimulate excellence, innovation, and collaboration in a professional environment that fosters the development of lifelong learners committed to advancing pharmacy’s role in healthcare and serving the community with integrity and compassion.” To that end, the school has a strong commitment to educating students with a “dynamic curriculum designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists for the future.”
The pharmacy profession is a highly respected career that offers both considerable challenges and significant rewards. There are many career tracks in pharmacy, including working in clinical, nuclear, hospital, industrial, and general pharmacy settings. In addition, pharmacists assist with home infusion therapy and managed care. The PharmD program at the school resides on the integrated medical campus environment of the Winchester Medical Center. The campus includes a comprehensive reference library focused on health professions as well as a state-of-the-art computer center that delivers a unique learning modality. The faculty is a wide-ranging mix of accomplished, skilled teachers, practicing clinicians, and researchers. Along with traditional course work, the program has a strong practical component that gives students real-world experience in a variety of pharmacy-related venues and environments. The result is a comprehensive education with just the right balance of high-level academics and practical experience.
The school graduated its first class in 2000. The PharmD program has a “2 plus 4″ focus and a “3 plus 4″ focus. These programs require students to complete 2 or 3 years of pre-pharmacy preparatory course work for a total of 65 semester hours. The 3 plus 4 program’s unique structure allows students to complete both general education and pharmacy prerequisite courses. Students on this track earn a BS degree after just one year in the pharmacy program. The program’s structure integrates traditional didactic course work with a strong experiential component in the form of clerkships.
