Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit is a private Catholic school located in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school was founded in 1878, and the Mylan School of Pharmacy opened in 1925. Duquesne was the first private Catholic university to be accredited in Pennsylvania. Duquesne University has over 10,000 students, and the Mylan School of Pharmacy has less than 3,000 students.
The school of pharmacy offers two different paths to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. There is a traditional program and a weekend program. The traditional program is a six-year program that starts out with two years of pre-professional study. Students who complete the first two years are not guaranteed a seat, but must apply to continue the program. The weekend program is for students who already possess a bachelor degree. It is for working professionals, and classes are only offered on the weekends. This program takes about three and a half years.
The Mylan School also offers a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences degree, as well as MS and PhD degrees in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Pharmacology.There is also a MS degree in Pharmacy Administration.
The U.S. News and World Report ranked the U.S. schools of pharmacy in 2008. The Mylan School of Pharmacy was ranked number 46, and received a score of 2.8 on a scale of 1-5. These rankings are determined by giving surveys to peers of the college both in academia and in business. That indicates that these scores are a better indication of the perception of the program than anything. The perception of a program is important, however, as it might affect your ability to get a job after graduation more than it effects the quality of your education.
