Compounding Pharmacy Offers Customized Healthcare Solutions

A compounding pharmacy offers customized healthcare solutions, including drugs and information about drug usage to the patients. In many ways, a compounding pharmacy is not too different from a clinical pharmacy. Apart from the fact that a compounding pharmacy offers customized healthcare solutions, the basic working model of these pharmacies is not too different from other pharmacies.

At times, compounded medications may do the trick for patients, especially when prescription drugs don’t work. Pharmacists working in these pharmacies prepare these drugs once they receive the request from the prescribers. Compounded medications often work for patients with special needs and thus, are considered critical to the patients.

Compounding pharmacies are governed by the PCAB (Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board). The PCAB is a voluntary accreditation system that governs strict guidelines for setting up of a compounding pharmacy. These guidelines ensure that compounding pharmacies follow the best practices in administering quality healthcare information and products to the patients.

Individuals should look for a PCAB certification when they decide to choose a compounding pharmacy. It is easy to take note of the PCAB seal, as it is is quite prominent and visible to the eyes.

In normal circumstances, compounding pharmacies would make compounded medications as the standard form in which the drug is available may not be deemed fit for intake by the patient. In such a scenario, the pharmacy would probably prepare a liquid form of the drug, rather than a capsule, which could then be taken by the patient easily. In most such cases, the prescriber of the drug would mandate the requirement.

Compounding pharmacies may not be needed in the normal course of treatment when everything goes per plan. They come in handy, though, when the doctor needs a special medicine to be administered to the patient. If the drug is not available according to specifications, the compounding pharmacy would get to work.
