The role of consultant pharmacies varies across countries. With reference to the United States of America and the United Kingdom, these pharmacies play a reviewer’s role. They review the medication prescription provided to a patient and study its effectiveness. Importantly, these pharmacies also ensure the accuracy, efficiency, and the efficacy of the medication provided to the patient.

The goal of a consultant pharmacy is to ensure that the medication provided to the patient works in healing the patient. In doing so, they also help in ironing out any medication-related issues that interfere with the normal course of treatment prescribed for the patient. For example, a consultant pharmacy would negate the use of iron tablets for a patient who is allergic to consuming iron in any form. This guidance helps doctors in prescribing the right course of treatment for the patients, ensuring that the goal of the healthcare treatment is met.

The role of a consultant pharmacy varies slightly in the United Kingdom. In the United Kingdom, these pharmacies are known to play a more proactive and advanced role in the healthcare treatment process of an individual. The Department of Health of England had issued guidelines in 2005, stating the role of these pharmacies very clearly. As per the guidelines issued, consultant pharmacies must work to improve patient care by working on the clinical excellence aspect.

In most healthcare settings, a consultant pharmacist works as a link between the clinical practice and service delivery aspects of healthcare, resulting in an efficient model that works to deliver the best quality healthcare treatment for patients.

The Competency Development and Evaluation Group (CODEG) has designed Advanced and Consultant Level Competency framework. This framework lays down the criteria and the requirements for clinical pharmacists to be in the role. Pharmacists who work in these pharmacies should be able to demonstrate their proficiency in six clusters identified by this model.

Consultant pharmacies work to ensure good quality healthcare treatment is provided to the patients.
