Industrial Pharmacy–A Highly Skilled Domain Of Medicine

Industrial pharmacies are often considered to be the backbone of a lot of other pharmacies that sell drugs. For example, a clinical pharmacy may actually sell the drug to the patient, but the industrial pharmacy actually manufactures and distributes the drug. The rules for the registration of pharmacists vary across roles, with registration being compulsory only for those who distribute these medicines to the public.

The core tasks of an industrial pharmacy are manufacturing and distribution. The manufacturing segment of these pharmacies often works in an open environment, fueled by the needs and demands of a specific drug from healthcare settings. For example, an industrial pharmacy may manufacture and distribute Alprazolam drugs if a lot of healthcare settings request this drug.

Individuals working in an industrial pharmacy need to have a Bachelor’s Degree with one year of compulsory training in the domain of expertise before they are able to work in an industrial pharmacy setting. While registration is not a compulsory requirement, it must be noted that this can vary across states depending on their state regulations.

Every country has an assessing body that evaluates and assesses the documents along with the skills of the industrial pharmacist. In Australia, for example, the assessing body is VETASSESS, which looks into the education and work profile of the aspirant who wishes to be an industrial pharmacist in that country. This body also looks after migrant applicants, people who have received their Bachelor’s education and work experience in another country.

Industrial pharmacy is the backbone of most other forms of pharmacy, because they supply the drugs demanded from pharmacies and hospital settings. They may not have a direct face-to-face interaction with the end user, but their products definitely reach the end user through either a community pharmacy, a clinical pharmacy, or a hospital pharmacy.
