The American Society For Pharmacy Law, which is also known as the ASPL, is where the fields of healthcare and law meet, or more specifically pharmaceuticals and law. The American Society For Pharmacy Law was formed in 1974 at a Chicago, Illinois convention for one of the other pharmacy-related professional organizations. The founder was Joseph L. Fink III, who practiced law relating to the pharmacy branch of medicine. At the time, Fink was on the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science faculty but he soon began to dedicate his time to the ASPL when he realized just what a vital role it could play in healthcare, particularly as the field advanced. This is why the mission statement of the ASPL mirrored his own philosophy – to “educate the pharmacist-attorneys, pharmacists, attorneys, and other interested parties on legal issues that affect pharmacy.”
Today, the American Society For Pharmacy Law is one of the most important professional member organizations in the field of healthcare because of advances in medicine. It provides legal knowledge to pharmacists and those connected with the field, encourages the communication of legal information between relevant parties, fosters knowledge about the rights and responsibilities of pharmacists, and provides a free speaking forum for members to discuss legislation. Remaining within legislation is essential in the field of pharmacy today and without the help of the American Society For Pharmacy Law, it would be much more difficult to accomplish that.
