The vision statement of the Washington State University College of Pharmacy reads as follows: “To be the preeminent college of pharmacy that provides world-class leadership in the quality of the student educational experience and faculty scholarship.” To support that vision, the college seeks to produce pharmacists who provide pharmaceutical healthcare that is “designed to improve an individual’s quality of life and the overall public health through both prevention and treatment.”
The college of pharmacy accepts about 100 students per year into the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. This is a 4-year course of study accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Along with the PharmD degree, the college offers degrees in exercise science (BS), dietetics, health policy and administration (MS), pharmacology/toxicology (MS and PhD), exercise physiology and metabolism (BS), and exercise science (MS). Postgraduate credentials offered include certification in dietetics and a pharmacy residency. The college employs about 60 professors in 7 departments and programs.
Some students participate in the college’s innovative hospital residency program. To qualify, the student must be eligible for licensing in Washington state and be a graduate of an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy. Factors like previous hospital pharmacy experience and a sound academic record influence (positive or negative) a candidate’s admission chances. In some cases, an advanced residency requires completion of a general residency.
The college also maintains a comprehensive drug information center (DIC). The DIC serves healthcare professionals across the state by providing critical and timely information about drug use and drug side effects. The information the center provides includes drug interactions, drug efficacy, appropriate dosage and therapy for a specific disease, foreign drug identification, new drug information, adverse reactions, drug biopharmaceutic and pharmacokinetic parameters, and information on investigational agents.
