About the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy: Pursuing Excellence

The West Virginia University School of Pharmacy has a regional and national focus. While committed to serving the needs and improving the health of the citizens of the state, it also seeks to serve society at large. The school has programs for both students and practitioners that provide a superior education in several realms, including pharmaceutical care, research, pharmacy practice, and economic development. Another part of the school’s mission is to provide “direct and supportive services to patients, the community, and the profession.”

Pharmacy education at West Virginia University (WVC) has a rich 90-year history and graduates of the program are leaders known across the state and country who follow the principles of excellence in all phases of their careers. The school of pharmacy’s mission statement supports that vision. In part, it seeks to educate students and practitioners to: “…provide optimal pharmaceutical care [and] conduct vital research that advances scientific knowledge, pharmacy practice, and economic development.”

The school offers a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. Pre-pharmacy requirements include a strong science background with emphasis on pharmacy practice. Coursework stresses oral and written communication skills and uses case studies along with problem-based learning. Candidates for admission should have an understanding of the healthcare system’s behavioral and administrative aspects as well as a scientific understanding of drug pharmacology and chemistry, therapeutics, pathophysiology, and pharmacokinetics.

The Mylan Center for Pharmaceutical Care Education offers a wide range of learning modalities, including a practice pharmacy. The school has approximately 350 students and accepts about 80 new students each year. West Virginia University holds full accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education.
