The University of South Carolina, located in Columbia, South Carolina and established in 1801, is a public research university. It was created in an effort to calm tensions between the Lowcountry and the Backcountry. During the antebellum period, USC became a symbol of the South. Graduates and USC students were in the forefront of the succession. After the war, the university was reorganized several times. It has several satellite campuses in other places in the state.
The college of pharmacy is one of 14 colleges that make up USC. It offers programs at two campuses, the USC campus in Columbia and the Medical University of South Carolina campus in Charleston. While made up of a single college, the two campuses each have a dean. Both colleges run the same Doctor of Pharmacy program, but offer slightly different graduate programs.
The Doctor of Pharmacy program requires four years, including some summers, to complete. Before being admitted for entrance, students must complete approximately two years of pre-pharmacy education, either at USC or at another college. Classes for the program are given during fall and spring semesters, and hands-on experiential programs are taken during the summer semester.
The college offers joint PharmD and MBA degrees in coordination with The Citadel. The MBA classes are given by The Citadel and take place in the evenings. This joint program can be completed in the same four-year timespan the PharmD program requires.
The school also offers MS and PhD degrees. These programs are under either the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences or the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcomes Sciences. The Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences offers PhDs in Biomedicinal or Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, and Pharmacology. The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcomes offers both MS and PhD degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Specializations for this degree include economics, public policy, marketing, and epidemiology.
