Wilkes University is a non-denominational private university located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The college was established in 1933 as a campus for Bucknell University. It became a separate school in 1940, and at that time named itself after John Wilkes, who was a radical British politician. Wilkes University has about 5,000 students, and the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy has about 200 full-time students.
The Nesbitt School of Pharmacy offers two degrees. They offer a BS in pharmaceutical sciences and a Doctor of Pharmacy program. The bachelors degree is a four-year program from which students can get entry-level pharmacy jobs or move on to graduate study.
The PharmD degree is a six-year program. It starts out with two years of pre-professional work and then with four years of professional work. Students admitted to the pre-professional program are automatically guaranteed a spot in the professional program. Students who completed pre-professional programs at other schools are also sometimes admitted to the program.
The school of pharmacy is focused more on teaching than on research. The limited choice of degrees means that faculty can put all of their attention into creating the best program possible, instead of being pulled between research and PhD students and teaching undergrads majoring in different subjects. Most of the focus is on the PharmD program. While the focus is on teaching, there is research done at the college, mostly to benefit the students and give them experience in conducting research.
The Nesbitt School of Pharmacy promotes close interaction between students and faculty. They try to keep class sizes small. The current limit on the size of each entering PharmD class is 70 students. They also place a high emphasis on technology. Whenever possible, the school tries to use computer-aided learning methods. They believe it is important to incorporate technology into their education to prepare students for continued advances in healthcare technology.
