Temple University is one of the largest universities in Pennsylvania. It has seven campuses in Philadelphia and offers over 300 degree programs. The college was founded in 1884 by Dr. Russell Conwell. It is a public-affiliated college, which means it receives some public money but is privately operated.
Russell Conwell was a Baptist minister who originally started the college in the basement of Grace Baptist Church. The school started just as tutoring services and the students were referred to as “night owls.” The school became known as Temple College in 1888 and was accredited in 1907.
The School of Pharmacy offers a Doctor of Pharmacy program as well as several other graduate degrees. The PharmD program is a four-year program. Before entering the program students must complete a two-year pre-professional program at Temple University or another college. Only after this are they admitted to the PharmD program.
The college also offers several types of MS and PhD degrees. You can choose between a non-thesis MS or a thesis MS or PhD. For the thesis degrees, students can focus on medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, or pharmacodynamics. They also offer a thesis-based MS in quality assurance and regulatory affairs. The non-thesis MS is in pharmaceutics.
The U.S. News and World Report ranked the US schools of pharmacy in 2008. Of those, the Temple University School of Pharmacy tied at rank number 61. They also gave the school a rating of 2.5 on a scale of 1-5. These rankings are determined by surveying peers, academic and professional. That means the ranking reflects the reputation of the school and the industry’s opinion of it. That is something that needs to be taken into account when choosing a university, because it will effect future job opportunities, but it does not necessarily represent the quality of the program or the experience it gives.
