Union University's Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) offers a variety of programs leading to a degree in the healthcare field. For students who want medical and pharmaceutical training, the college offers degree tracks in pharmacy, clinical laboratory sciences, pre-med, biomedical technology, and cytotechnology. ACPHS also is in the forefront of pharmaceutical research with its Pharmaceutical Research Institute and Center for NanoPharmaceuticals that focus on discovering and developing new drugs. Founded in 1881, the College has over 1,500 students.
With growth in the pharmaceutical and related industries poised to rise significantly, ACPHS graduates will have plenty of well-paid and rewarding career opportunities in both the public and private sectors. The college also has a set of innovative agreements with nearby institutions that expand the academic offerings to include tracks for the following: pre-med, pre-law, pre-physician assistant, and MBA. On its own, ACPHS offers a comprehensive range of graduate and undergraduate degrees. Undergraduates can opt for a BS in biomedical technology, health and human services, or pharmaceutical sciences. Graduate programs include Doctor of Pharmacy, MS in pharmaceutical sciences, health outcomes research, and pharmacy administration. There also is a nephrology pharmacology fellowship.
The college has a selective admissions policy. After applying, top applicants must complete on-campus, in-person interviews. At this time, applicants meet with faculty members to discuss their qualifications, experience in the healthcare field, and reasons for choosing a career in pharmacy. The interviewers evaluate the applicants' maturity, professionalism, and communication skills. Another part of the interview process requires submitting a writing sample for assessment. This is an exercise that asks applicants to respond to a scientific statement and data by writing a 200-to 300- word document. The document tests the interviewees' accuracy and ability to interpret, along with clarity, organization, and use of conventions. The college also offers continuing education in the pharmacy program.
