The University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy offers a core group of degree programs. The professional Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program trains students to practice as pharmacists. The PharmD degree compares to other healthcare degrees such as Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD). The school also offers a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences that prepares students to practice as clinical researchers. The MS in health system pharmacy trains pharmacists to assume leadership roles in pharmacy or pharmacy-related fields. Those who have a PharmD or PhD degree can elect to pursue opportunities like residencies and fellowships. For practicing pharmacists, the school has a continuing education program in partnership with the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists.
Founded in 1897, the Eshelman School of Pharmacy encourages students to be active members of the education and healthcare continuum. With a strong academic core, the program promotes broad-based collaborative scientific and scholarly activities. The magazine US News and World Report ranks the school in the top three nationwide. In addition, the prestigious UNC Hospitals offer students exposure to a real world hospital environment.
In 2009, the school interviewed nearly 300 students for fall entrance and accepted about 150. Of that number, 71% were transfer students, 18% were out-of-state students, 27% were male, and 73% were female. The average GPA of accepted students is 3.6 and 82% of seats in the entering class went to state residents, with the remaining going to out-of-state and transfer students. The school requires a minimum composite score of 65% on the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT).
Pharmacy students at the Eshelman School of Pharmacy have a unique learning opportunity in a statewide network of nine Area Health Education Centers (AEHC). AEHC is a national model program focused on public health service. At UNC, students help to staff two indigent care clinics. The student body at large is active and engaged in a variety of professional organizations. The school’s location is in the heart of the vaunted Research Triangle, a vibrant area that is home to an increasing number of companies with scientific or technical orientations.
