Belmont University College of Pharmacy

Belmont University is a private Christian university founded in 1890. It is located in Nashville, Tennessee, and is the second largest private college in the state. The university, originally named Belmont College, got its name from the land it is on. The property started out as the Belle Monte mansion, which was the home of a wealthy Nashville businesswoman. The mansion is still on the college campus, now used as a museum.

The College of Pharmacy is a very new addition to Belmont University. The first class of students was admitted in 2008. The college offers a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Before entry to the degree program, students must fulfill two years of pre-pharmacy requirements. These can be filled at Belmont University or at another accredited college. Once the prerequisites are met, the PharmD program takes four years to complete.

The PharmD curriculum emphasizes the importance of real world interaction. From the first year of the program, students are exposed to hands-on learning at various onsite locations, as well as being taught by professionals in the pharmaceutical field.

Prior to the opening of the College of Pharmacy, the University hired Dr. Philip E. Johnston to be the dean. Before coming to Belmont University, Dr. Johnston worked at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Vanderbilt University is located near Belmont University, and is the only private college in Tennessee that is bigger.

Belmont University is a relatively small school. It has just over 5,000 students in total. The pharmacy program is still relatively small, since it was very recently founded. The university places a high emphasis on their Christian component and upholds Christian values in their mission statement and in their teaching.
