South Dakota State University was founded in 1881 as Dakota Agriculture College. In 1904 the curriculum was expanded and the college changed its name to South Dakota State College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts. Then in 1964 the college again changed its name, this time to South Dakota State University, to reflect its change towards a more comprehensive education.
SDSU has had a pharmacy program for as long as it has been a college. The college currently offers several different degree programs. The Doctor of Pharmacy degree is a six-year program that begins with two years of pre-pharmacy training. After those two years, students enter the PharmD program. The program itself has three years of study followed by one year of clinical experience.
The College of Pharmacy also offers a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences. This can be done on its own, or as a joint program while working on a PharmD degree. A Bachelor of Science and a Master of Biological Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences are also offered.
The college is in the process of building a new building. It is expected that they will move to this new state-of-the-art building sometime late in 2010. The new building has all of the newest equipment and technology to give the best possible environment for learning and research.
In the U.S. News and World Report rankings, the College of Pharmacy at SDSU was number 61. It got a score of 2.5 on a scale from 1-5. These rankings are determined through surveys given to professionals in the field, both in academia and in business. The score therefore represents the reputation of a program, which can be important after graduation for finding jobs. The ranking does not necessarily reflect the quality of the education a specific program will give you, but the reputation of a program is often based on the quality of graduates it produces.
