Is There a Link Between Fertility Treatment and Cerebral Palsy?
Perhaps you are in the situation where you would do just about anything to have a child. You and spouse may not be able to conceive. If you can’t get approved to adopt a child, you may begin to feel depressed about it. If you love children, you may want an army of rug rats running around your house. Then, just when you thought you have tried everything, perhaps you have decided to consider fertility treatment. After your spouse thinks about it, you decide to undergo the treatment to increase your chances of having a child.
If you are one of the 150,000 women trying to get pregnant using the assisted reproduction treatment, there is new research available that should get your attention. A study pouring over 590,000 births in Denmark between 1995 and 2003 found that children conceived through fertility treatment had an increased risk of developing cerebral palsy. Research revealed that assisted reproduced children were twice more likely to be diagnosed with the disorder. This is compared to those naturally conceived.
According to the United Cerebral Palsy Association, more than 500,000 people are living with the disorder. The statistic only consists of Americans. Cerebral palsy is viewed as a group of disorders instead of just one. The most common type is spastic cerebral palsy. Symptoms include tight muscles and joints that are unable to stretch out, abnormal walking, and weak muscles.
Other cerebral palsy types include dyskinetic, ataxic, hypotonic, and mixed. The disorder usually develops when the child is still in the womb. Parents don’t usually start seeing signs of the disorder until the child is three months to two years old. Causes of cerebral palsy can be bleeding in the child’s brain, infections contracted from the mother, head injury, or severe jaundice. Jaundice is a condition in a child where high levels of bilirubin are found in the child’s blood leading to the skin and whites of its eyes becoming yellow. The study from Denmark shows the increase risk of cerebral palsy could be because the number of embryos implanted into the mother during fertility treatment.
Typically, fertility treatment removes eggs from the mother and combines them with sperm from the father. It is all done in a lab. Then, multiple embryos are placed back in the mother to see if she becomes pregnant. Many times, the mother will give birth to more than one child. Usually, the child or children will be born preterm.
The researchers in the study believe these multi-births and preterm labors are what cause the heightened risk of cerebral palsy. In both the United States and Europe, the risk of a child having cerebral palsy is low compared other disorders. Other studies show normal risk of the disorder is one out of 1,000 children will display cerebral palsy symptoms.
Of the 590,000 births, only 0.2 percent of the children had cerebral palsy. Those who were in the in vitro fertilization group were doubled compared to the typical statistic. Children conceived with fertility drugs were 55 percent higher than the IVF group alone. These are important findings that any couple considering using fertility treatments should consider before going forward with the procedure.
The Importance of a Routine Pap Smear for Women
Getting a pap smear isn’t a pleasant process, but it is something that a woman should be doing annually. This particular check up can help to identify signs that there is something wrong. It could be something minor or the onset of cervical cancer. Many women are embarrassed by the process of a pap smear but keep in mind that the medical staff involved are all professionals.
A pap smear doesn’t hurt and if it does, let your doctor know. That can be a sign of an inflammation of the cervix. During the testing, cells from the cervix will be placed on slide so they can be looked at under a microscope. If you have a family history of cervical cancer, than you should make getting a regular pap smear a priority. Make sure you inform your doctor if you have anyone in your family with such a medical history.
Sometimes a pap smear will come back showing abnormal cells. If that is the case your doctor will ask you to come in for a second test. Based on those results, treatment may have to be looked at. Most of the time, the cells will be fine and there is nothing else that has to be done. The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes but it can help you to be healthier so it is worth the time.
Getting a pap smear is something young girls should be doing if they are sexually active. Talk to your daughters about that and schedule an appointment for them. Make sure they understand what the procedure will be so that they aren’t anxious about it. For many women over 30, it may be fine to get a pap smear only every 3 years. However, this is only true if the results have been satisfactory in the past.
Women that have many sexual partners are at a greater risk of STDs. That can be determined during a pap smear as well. In fact, many women don’t have a clue they have an STD until they do such a test. In the meantime, they may be infecting other men due to taking part in unprotected intercourse.
A woman that has had a hysterectomy no longer needs to have pap smears. However, even older women that no longer take part in sexual activities need to continue getting them. There is always a chance of cancer cells forming or other health problems. They can go unnoticed until they are in advanced stages if the pap smears aren’t being conducted.
With so many women not having health insurance coverage, too often the length of time they between pap smears is very long. If you don’t have insurance, there are various clinics out there that offer sliding scale fees. The goal of these establishments is to make sure women are able to afford taking care of their health. Contact them to find out what they have available.
Why the use of Defensive Medicine is a Controversy
You can’t blame medical professionals for taking part in defensive medicine. If a patient should be misdiagnosed, there are often lawsuits. Doctors are so afraid of making mistakes due to malpractice suits that they often cover all the bases to an extreme. This often means that patients are being asked to complete more tests than they really need to.
Many people maintain that medical professionals should have enough training to properly diagnose health concerns without all of those tests. However, it is common that symptoms can be the result of many different underlying problems. That is where defensive medicine comes in. Doctors and hospitals have to be able to back up the fact that they did all they could to provide a very accurate diagnosis.
In fact, this practice is so common that 90% of doctors take part in defensive medicine. If you have to see the doctor but you don’t have insurance, you can ask them about which of the tests they are asking for are absolutely necessary. By doing so, you can help to reduce the overall cost of what you will have to pay out of pocket for your health care.
With the number of lawsuits against doctors increasing and payouts to those patients at high dollar amounts, insurance is expensive. Medical professionals are virtually backed into a corner where they have to take part in defensive medicine. If they aren’t doing so, they leave themselves wide open for damages if such cases are filed against them. They have worked too hard and too long to allow their practices to be compromised in this way.
The controversy comes from the fact that patients feel taken advantage of. They are poked and prodded and have to schedule many forms of testing to get a diagnosis from their doctor. Many people agree that laws need to be tighter surrounding lawsuits in the medical field. Only then will the use of defensive medicine begin to decrease and the cost to the patients reduced as well.
With health care costs continually on the rise, taking notice of the problem on all levels has created quite a stir. Studies indicate more than $60 billion is spent annually on defensive medicine. A great deal of that money is coming from government funded programs. Higher insurance premiums are also a result of so much being billed annually for excessive testing. For those that have to pay out of pocket, the struggle to come up with the money to pay off the bills for medical care is extremely difficult.
The bottom line is that medical professionals are not trying to bill you at every turn for all the tests they can make you take. Instead, they are doing a thorough job to make sure they don’t end up with problems later on. Most medical professionals take their position to help patients very seriously. The last thing they want is to see it compromised. As a result of this defensive medicine helps them to reduce errors and it protects them from lawsuits.
The Link Between Anxiety Disorders and Heart Disease
Anxiety disorders affect more people than most of us think. In society, though, anxiety disorders are commonly misunderstood. As a result, many people try to hide them. They don’t go out socially and their personal relationships suffer. It is important to get help for anxiety disorders, though, so you can enjoy life to the fullest. You don’t want to miss out on great activities due to anxiety.
There is another reason why you should get the problem under control as well. It has to do with the fact that studies show a link between anxiety disorders and heart disease. Anyone that has an anxiety disorder may also be at an increased the risk of a heart attack or stroke occurring. With heart disease being the number one cause of death in the United States, it is important to address such issues as early as possible.
This information is based on a large study involving 1,000 individuals. The study lasted for 5 ½ years and during that time more than 350 of the participants suffered from a heart attack or some other health problem that caused damage to the heart. There is a great deal of stress on the heart during an anxiety attack and that is where the risk is coming from. The more anxiety attacks that a person has and the longer they last, the higher the risk of permanent damage to the heart.
When anxiety disorders also cause symptoms of depression, there is also additional stress on the heart. When problems of anxiety are combined with other serious health problems, such as diabetes, it can be very serious due to the way in which the nerves that go to the heart are affected adversely. The way in which this all occurs is very complex and there is still a lot of research that has to be done. Still, there is enough information that has been uncovered to explain just how important the link between anxiety disorders and heart disease can be.
Taking steps to treat depression and to alleviate anxiety disorders is very important. There are breathing techniques that you can learn that can help when an anxiety attack is coming on. Therapy to help alter behavior has been very successful as a form of treatment. However, these types of solutions to anxiety problems seem to work best when the patient is also taking some form of medication to assist with reducing anxiety disorders.
It is believed that there is definitely a link between anxiety disorders and heart disease. The risk can increase as much as 75% which is dangerously high. For those individuals with a family history of heart disease, that percentage can be even higher. If you suffer from anxiety disorders, you definitely need to schedule an appointment with your doctor to discuss the related risk to your heart.
Don’t be afraid to explain the symptoms you are having, their severity, and their frequency. The more accurate information they have, the easier it will be for them to assist you. Be willing to try a combination of different forms of treatment so that you can keep your heart as healthy as possible. Offsetting heart disease can add many more years to your life.
Examining the Effectiveness of the Lower Back Pain Medication Glucosamine
Finding a quality lower back pain medication that works without having to endure unpleasant side effects is very important. One type of medication is called Glucosamine and it is often prescribed to help patients cope with lower back pain. In fact, in recent years, it seems to be the number one type of medication that was being offered. Many doctors were prescribing Glucosamine for their patients in need without thinking twice.
However, there have been extensive studies that show that Glucosamine really doesn’t work to help control the pain. These studies included people that were given the drug and others who took a placebo. The results are very disappointing to those that do suffer from lower back pain. The medical community had vested a great deal of hope in this particular lower back pain medication working for their patients. Now people suffering with chronic lower back pain feel that they have been misled and they are out of good options.
This particular lower back pain medication, however, did not offer any more relief than what the people in the placebo group experienced. There have been other such studies conducted and they are all showed the same results. These studies have often been done on the same groups of volunteers for periods of up to six months. The results don’t show that their lower back pain was helped at all by the use of Glucosamine.
One of the main reasons why Glucosamine has been so popular is that it is an affordable type of medication. The other advantage of the medication is that there aren’t very many side effects while taking it. The safe and affordable nature of the drug are things that many people are interested in. However, the fact that it doesn’t work means none of that really matters.
Too often, when someone is taking a form of lower back pain medication, they find themselves are paying an exorbitant price for it. At the same time, many medications bring with them adverse side effects. With Glucosamine being one that didn’t have such problems, it was understandable why so many people with lower back pain were excited about this drug.
It is understandable why you may be looking for a lower back pain medication. However, make it clear to your doctor that you don’t want to take Glucosamine. It can be upsetting when you take a pain medication that doesn’t work for you. Lower back pain can prevent a person from being able to work or get enough sleep. It can also prevent you from enjoying time with family or social activities.
Many doctors have put a halt in their practice on offering Glucosamine to patients. What is frustrating, though, is that there really aren’t too many other options that they do have. It is hopeful though that with continued research, there will be a solution that can offer terrific relief. In the meantime patients are encouraged to look at the choices of lower back pain medication products to see if any of them may offer them some type of overall relief.
Understanding the Signs of Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is more common than many people think. With this health problem, a person may become sleepy at any time throughout the day. They are often categorized as being lazy but that isn’t the reality of the situation. For people with narcolepsy, falling asleep while at work, driving, or at home is very common. It can also result in the patient experiencing poor concentration, slower reflexes, and experiencing hallucinations.
A person with narcolepsy may have a strong need for sleep every three hours or so. When these feelings come on, they can easily fall asleep wherever they may be. It could be while they are in the middle of some activity as well which makes safety is a huge concern for individuals with narcolepsy.
After a nap of about 15 to 30 minutes, though, you may feel fully refreshed again. This is a cycle that will repeat itself again and again during your waking hours. If you have narcolepsy, it is sometimes hard though to know what is real and what is a dream. This is because narcolepsy results in a person having dreams quickly upon falling asleep. However, they may be awake but think they are dreaming or the other way around.
Temporary paralysis can also occur when someone suffers from narcolepsy. This symptom might occur right after you wake up. It can be stressful at first because you can’t move various parts of the body. If your narcolepsy strikes while you are involved in some kinds of activities, the inability to move can put you in a very dangerous situation.
If you have symptoms of narcolepsy, it is a good idea to schedule an appointment with your doctor. Talk to him or her about what you are experiencing and your concerns. Your doctor can help you get a complete diagnosis through testing and a full assessment. If you do have narcolepsy, you should be on a regular sleep schedule, take short naps throughout the day, get plenty of exercise, and limit your intake of caffeine.
The stigma that comes with Narcolepsy in our society is one that can make it hard to go to a doctor. Many people with this type of disorder try to hide it because they don’t want people to see them as being someone that doesn’t want to work or that is just plain lazy. You should put these concerns aside because narcolepsy is a genuine disorder and you should seek medical attention for the problem. If someone you know may be suffering from narcolepsy, encourage him or her to get help and to not give in to those stigmas that can stand in the way of the help they need.
Many people with narcolepsy are able to live a life that is productive after they get the help that they need. There are various forms of treatment that can help to reduce the risks of the disorder and to reduce the need to sleep so often during the hours when you should be awake. Narcolepsy will continue to get worse if you don’t get help for it.
Since this type of health problem can be misdiagnosed, it is best to talk to your regular doctor. You can also ask for a referral to a specialist that has the expertise to look at such concerns in depth. It is often found that the body isn’t producing enough Hypocretin which is a type of neurochemical. With proper diagnosis and treatment, you can live with your narcolepsy and not allow it to cause you undue stress or put you in any further danger.

How Should a Woman Change Her Vitamins During Pregnancy?
Having a baby is usually the happiest time of a couple’s life. They have been expecting and preparing for the child for nine months. A woman’s role in the proper development of her child during pregnancy is of the utmost importance. Depending on the habits of the future mother, her child can be born with birth defects or be born a healthy and happy baby.
There are several ways a pregnant woman can help her unborn child grow perfectly while in the womb. She can take vitamins to help prepare her body and her child. The kinds of vitamins that she will be instructed to take by her doctor are prenatal vitamins. These multivitamins are specially formulated to help correct any vitamin deficit in a pregnant woman. This will help with the nutritional vitamin deficiency a pregnant woman will naturally experience.
The prenatal vitamins will include a number of important minerals and vitamins. The most important vitamins that are needed to ensure a fetus’ development are iron, folic acid, and calcium. Babies and pregnant women are most at risk for iron deficiency because of the amount of growth they go through and require. Iron helps the blood take oxygen to the rest of the body.
Folic acid, a B vitamin the body uses to create cells, is significant in reducing your child’s risk in developing neural tube. Neural tube is a serious birth defect affecting the child’s spinal cord causing it not to close completely. The child displays paralysis, inconsistence, and mental retardation.
Doctors recommend 400 micrograms of folic acid but the amount can be as high as 4,000 micrograms depending on the woman and the risk the child may display. You don’t need to take a vitamin to get folic acid. By including green leafy vegetables, nuts, beans, and citrus fruits in your diet, it can supply you the folic acid you need.
Calcium is also an important vitamin because it assists both the mother and the child. When the unborn baby grows, it puts pressure on the mother’s body. This causes the mother’s bone density to decrease. Calcium helps prevent the mother from losing the bone density.
A recent study from the researchers at Queen's University Belfast found taking vitamin supplements would not reduce a pregnant woman’s blood pressure disorder or preeclampsia as previously thought. This study focused on pregnant women who have type 1 diabetes. Vitamin C and E were the supplements thought to help reduce preeclampsia.
Doctors may instruct you to change your diet to include foods at naturally contain iron, folic acid, and calcium. Remember to stay in contact with your doctor. Be honest if you haven’t been taking the vitamins or if you are having complications with the pregnancy. Your GP is there to assist you and your child. Take advantage of your doctor's advice because anything you can do to help your baby develop properly and be born healthy is worth the effort.
How Palliative Care is Different from Hospice
Palliative care is becoming more popular than ever before. This type of care helps to offer support and treatment to the patient. There are also representatives to help the family and friends of the patient so it becomes an all around support system. Many people mistake palliative care for hospice but they are quite different from each other.
The main difference is that hospice care is only offered when a patient is towards the end of life. There is no hope of a recovery so the goal becomes making them as comfortable as possible prior to that final moment of passing away. It also focuses on offering assistance to the family and friends of the patient in their dire time of need. It can be extremely difficult to stand by and watch someone slip away.
Palliative care is offered from the very start of the illness. It is often an extension of what goes on in the doctor’s office. The individual needs of the patient are taken into advisement before a plan of action is initiated. The patient and their family have a great deal of control throughout the program about what they want to be involved with and what they want to pass up.
There are a variety of symptoms that a patient has to exhibit in order to qualify for palliative care. They can include breathing problems, pain, changes in sleep patterns, stress, reduced strength, and a variety of others. Most of the time, a patient only has to meet one of the criteria to be eligible for the program.
Being able to feel in control over an illness is very important. Through palliative care, a person can feel empowered. The time they get in the doctor’s office isn’t enough for them to get one on one constant care. The amount of time that will be offered through palliative care depends on the individual needs of the patient.
Another huge difference between palliative care and hospice is that these patients are still activity seeking a cure for their illness. When a patient is in hospice care, they are looking for a way to reduce pain and to prepare for the end. Palliative care gives hope, encouragement, and the support that is needed for as long as it is needed.
The goal of palliative care is to help these patients be able to fully recover from their illness in the shortest amount of time. In addition to medical treatments, they may be pursuing home remedies, dietary changes, and an exercise program. All of these efforts can help with the battle against an array of different types of health problems.
If you or someone you know is suffering from an illness, it can take a toll on everyone. Palliative care can help to make sure you are able to get the support and assistance that is needed. In many cases, this can make a huge difference in the patient’s ability to recover. It can also help to improve their quality of life as they struggle with the illness.
Making a Plan for Dealing With Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition in women where the uterine tissue grows outside the uterus. This condition can be painful and it can prevent pregnancy from occurring. It is believed that about five percent of the female population could have a problem with endometriosis. If a closer look is taken, in women who have heavier menstrual cramps, the risk of having endometriosis is as high as thirty percent. Endometriosis is a complex condition because gynecologists aren’t sure what the cause of the disease is and why it affects the ability to get pregnant.
Endometriosis symptoms can create two types of problems. The first problem is that in some cases, women can experience some pain. The second problem is when endometriosis inhibits the ability to become pregnant.
Pain is experienced in the pelvic or lower back area, in the intestines, during or after intercourse, and during bowel movements or during urination while menstruating. Other symptoms include painful menstrual cramps that worsen over time, bleeding between menstrual cycles, fatigue, and experiencing nausea, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea during the menstrual cycle.
There are several ways to deal with endometriosis. The method that is used depends a great deal on the severity of the pain and if pregnancy is in the future. Endometriosis has no cure so doctors generally treat the symptoms to make patients more comfortable. Before dealing with finding an endometriosis treatment, you have to decide if you have immediate pregnancy plans. This decision will determine the direction of your treatment.
Because endometriosis happens during the menstrual years of a women’s life, your age may also determine the best treatment for you. For example, if you are in your mid-twenties, you may decide to treat the pain and work with your doctor to figure out pregnancy plans. However, if you are in your fifties, you will probably only be treated for the pain.
The only real treatment for endometriosis pain would be hormone therapy. This type of therapy reduces the estrogen levels. By reducing the estrogen levels, the endometriosis pain is minimized. If you are specifically being treated for the pain or bleeding of endometriosis, your doctor may wish to talk to you about other options.
One option the doctor might mention would be birth control hormones used in patches, pills, or a ring. The other option would be anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS. Birth control treatments may keep endometriosis from progressing. Anti-inflammatory treatments are used to reduce bleeding, inflammation, and the pain caused by endometriosis.
If you do have plans to become pregnant in the immediate future, infertility treatment may be what is best for you. You and your doctor will work together to make this important decision. Your age, general health, and the severity your endometriosis will all play a part in determining a treatment. In dealing with endometriosis, especially when you want to get pregnant, there are some things you can do to increase your chances of pregnancy.
The first would be having intercourse during the most fertile days of your menstrual cycle. The most fertile days are the 14 days before your period. Another option to increase your chances to get pregnant is through laparoscopic surgery. This surgery removes the endometriosis and scar tissue which reduces the pain and increases your pregnancy chances. Super-ovulation medicine, intrauterine insemination, and in vitro fertilization are all options to improve your chances as well. These treatments work together to help you deal with endometriosis while still being able to start your family.
