CompleteRX http://www.completerx.com Pharmacy Management Thu, 10 Mar 2011 13:29:58 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.2.1 Parents Should Be Aware of the Signs of Childhood Cancer http://www.completerx.com/latest/1883 http://www.completerx.com/latest/1883#comments Thu, 10 Mar 2011 13:29:58 +0000 http://www.completerx.com/?p=1883 In the United States, pediatricians diagnose fourteen out of 100,000 children with cancer each year. Though childhood cancer is uncommon, it is important as parents to be aware of the signs of cancer in children. If your child is diagnosed with cancer, it is critical that she is diagnosed quickly.

Leukemia, lymphoma, and brain tumors are the kind of cancers that are most often diagnosed in children. Sometimes oesteosarcoma, a cancer in the bones, is diagnosed. Other, less common forms of cancer, such as neuroblastoma, wilms tumor, and retinoblastoma, may also be diagnosed.

These cancer types all have symptoms, which are difficult to recognize. For example, if your child is experiencing lethargy, frequent fevers, and joint pain, he or she may have leukemia. However, these symptoms are also attributed to the flu.

Your child’s young immune system is developing. So, pediatricians do not always associate symptoms of common illness to symptoms of childhood cancer. As a parent, follow your instincts. If you feel your child may be experiencing symptoms that are more extreme than the common flu, talk to your pediatrician and begin the necessary tests.

Depending on what kind of cancer your child may have, different tests will be required to pinpoint the cancer. If your pediatrician suspects your child may have leukemia, he will require she take a blood test. If that test comes back positive, it is followed by a bone marrow test to confirm the diagnosis.

Cancer develops in the body like a common disease. Cells begin to grow in one location and then spread throughout the body. Unlike in adults, cancer in children is not attributed to smoking or exposure to harmful toxins. Instead it most often occurs because of genetic mutation in the cells. There are few ways to prevent cancer in children.

However, the survival rate for children with cancer is greater than the survival rate of adults. More research is done on childhood cancer, and up to 77% of children diagnosed with cancer are cured. Also, teenagers treated by child cancer specialists have a higher chance of survival.

Research is still being done to find a cure for childhood cancer. Perhaps one day doctors will know how to prevent cancer in children. However, today, it is important that as parents, you are aware of the signs of childhood cancer so that it can be combated from the beginning.

The acronym “child cancer” created by Patty Feist, a mother of a cancer survivor, may help you remember and become aware of common signs of cancer in children

The Threat to the Sources of Inhalers for Asthma Patients is a Concern http://www.completerx.com/latest/1838 http://www.completerx.com/latest/1838#comments Fri, 04 Mar 2011 20:50:04 +0000 http://www.completerx.com/?p=1838 Inhalers for asthma patients have been used as a source of long-term medication. This includes the younger ones that also have such breathing restrictions. However, there are studies that show that these inhalers can actually cause some health threats. Understanding the risks can help you to determine if you or your children should continue to use one or not.

According to the FDA, there are some inhalers that aren’t safe due to the fact that we don’t know where they came from. It is believed that some of them have been stolen over time, then reappear for sale in various locations. It could be that they are sold as illegitimate supplies in order for someone to make money.

This possibility raises the concern that these inhalers may not be working like they should for asthma patients. The stolen medication can become less effective due to the fact that it wasn’t properly stored. These medications have to be at a certain temperature to remain effective. They may also be outdated, so the dates always need to be checked.

There is also the risk that inhalers for asthma patients may have been tampered with. It is a good idea to check the lot numbers online for those that have been reported stolen. If you have any of these inhalers, you should immediately contact your local law enforcement agency. You should also report the incident to the FDA so they can look around locally for more of them.

Most of the time, inhalers for asthma patients are an excellent source of medication. They allow the patient to be able to open up their airways. It also helps to offset an asthma attack so that it doesn’t fully materialize. This type of medication has to be used only as directed to ensure that it is used properly. Never use an inhaler that is prescribed for someone else.

Children need to be taught the right way to use an inhaler, too. They should practice with a parent at all times until they have it down correctly. Older children can carry their inhaler with them. Younger children should have one at the school with the nurse or physical education instructor.

There are many side effects when using inhalers for asthma patients, so it is important to work closely with your doctor. Children may not grow like they should if they use too much of such medications. It should never be used for those under 4 years of age. Smoking in conjunction with inhaler use is not a good idea because it can result in accelerated bone loss. A lack of exercise can also cause bone problems with inhaler use, so daily exercise is very important.

The Troubling Relationship between PCBs and Blood Pressure Problems http://www.completerx.com/latest/1877 http://www.completerx.com/latest/1877#comments Thu, 24 Feb 2011 00:05:17 +0000 http://www.completerx.com/?p=1877

Polychlorinated biphenols, or PCBs are pollutants that were commonly used in the production of paints and dyes, thermal insulation, electrical equipment, and investment casing wax which allowed production of components from metal or alloys.  PCBs were banned in 1979, when the cancer-causing effects of PCBs began to be suspected and studied.  PCBs stay in the soil, air and water for long periods of time without breaking down.

Studies have shown conclusively that PCBs cause cancer in animals.  They are also linked to adverse effects on the central nervous system, immune system, reproductive system and endocrine system.  These health effects may be interrelated since negative effects on one system may have serious implications for other bodily functions.  Studies and research has not been limited to animal studies. Human studies have raised serious concerns regarding the cancer-causing properties of PCBs.  In 1996, an EPA study concluded that PCBs are a probable human carcinogen.  This study was conducted under the direction of Congress.

A recent study, published in July 2010, was conducted concerning the residents of Anniston, Alabama.  A PCB plant is located in Anniston and was closed down when PCBs were banned.  This study focused on the relationship between PCBs and blood pressure problems.  For purposes of the study, researchers set the level at which blood pressure was considered high at 140/90 or higher.  The study focused on 394 residents of Anniston who were not taking medication for high blood pressure and adjusted their numbers for other risk factors such as gender, age and weight.  Their blood was tested as well as blood pressure and cholesterol levels monitored.

Even though it had been three decades since the since the ban on PCBs, these residents had higher levels of PCBs in their blood, showing that PCBs do not break down.  Of the 394 residents studied, those with the highest levels of PCBs, the top third, were more than 3.5 times more likely to have high blood pressure than the lowest third.  This study strongly suggested than PCBs are probable human carcinogens.  Those workers exposed to PCBs also showed an increase in rare liver cancers and malignant melanoma.

It is not clear how PCBs contribute to high blood pressure, but it is theorized that they may disrupt genes that regulate blood pressure.  Another theory is that PCBs may alter the way hormones work, encouraging inflammation and disrupting cell functioning.  Even this long after PCBs have been banned, they are still found in animal fats, especially fish, meats, dairy products, eggs and breast milk.

In addition to the relationship between PCBs and blood pressure problems, a variety of serious health effects have been linked to higher levels of PCBs.  These include effects on the nervous system, the immune system, the reproductive system and the endocrine system.  PCBs are one of the most widely studied environmental contaminants.  Studies were also conducted by the EPA, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the National Toxicology Program and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.  R. Thomas Zoeller, professor of biology at the University of Massachusetts, made the suggestion that we eat fewer animal fats and become more aware of the risks of chemicals contamination of this nature.

Screening May be the Key to Dealing with Bad Cholesterol http://www.completerx.com/latest/1871 http://www.completerx.com/latest/1871#comments Mon, 21 Feb 2011 00:17:02 +0000 http://www.completerx.com/?p=1871 According to a study done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than half of young adults don’t take advantage of cholesterol screening even though a quarter of them have elevated cholesterol. They say that the screening rate of this age group is less than 50 percent, in spite of the number of individual risk factor. The rate ranges from 7 percent to 26 percent of elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), commonly known as bad cholesterol among young adults.

Cholesterol cannot be dissolved in the blood; it has to be moved to and from the cells by carriers called lipoprotein. It is important to identify the amount of or level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), commonly known as bad cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL). Two types of lipids, HDL and LDL, together with triglycerides and Lp(a) cholesterol make up your total cholesterol count that can be determined by blood testing.

Atherosclerosis is a condition where too much LDL-C (bad) cholesterol circulates in the blood that can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. This plus other substances can form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. A heart attack or a stroke can result if a clot forms and blocks a narrow artery.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) known as good cholesterol carries about one-fourth to one-third of blood cholesterol because high levels of HDL seems to protect against heart attack. On the other hand, low levels of HDL (less than 40 mg/dl) also increase the risk of heart disease. Medical experts think that HDL most likely carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver. HDL removes excess cholesterol from the arteries, slowing its build up. This is what some experts believe.

A form of fat made in the body is known as triglyceride. Individuals with high triglycerides most of the time have a high total cholesterol level, including a high LDL (bad) and a low HDL (good) level. Many people with heart disease and/or diabetes also have high triglyceride levels. High triglycerides can be the result of being overweight, physical inactivity, cigarette smoking, too much alcohol consumption and a diet very high in carbohydrates (60% of total calories or more).

High levels of Lp(a) is a major risk factor for the premature development of fatty deposits in the arteries. Lp(a) is a genetic variation of LDL(bad) cholesterol. While it is not fully understood, it may interact with substances found in artery walls that add to the buildup of fatty deposits. Understand the function of these different types of cholesterol in our blood that will help us choose the right lifestyle and food intake to help us from having heart attack or stroke. Screening will help us identify the levels of good and bad cholesterol in our blood. This will help us deal with the bad cholesterol wisely and effectively.

The Elevated Risk of Bowel Cancer in African Americans May Have Emotional and Social Causes http://www.completerx.com/latest/1830 http://www.completerx.com/latest/1830#comments Sat, 12 Feb 2011 20:03:32 +0000 http://www.completerx.com/?p=1830 The risk of bowel cancer in African Americans is much higher than for everyone else. This may be due to a combination of both emotional and social concerns. Being aware of them, though, can help you to make some changes that may reduce the chances of such a health problem occurring.

Medical professionals should be telling African Americans about the risk of bowel cancer. Many people simply aren’t aware of it and how to reduce the chances of it occurring. Getting the message out there about prevention and early detection can be a huge step in lowering the risks.

Statistics show that many African Americans are living in poverty. They aren’t getting the proper nutrition that they need from a very early age. A poor diet is a leading cause for bowel cancer to develop. Not getting regular medical care is also part of the problem. These individuals living in poverty aren’t able to get help even when they really need it.

Since they aren’t getting the cancer diagnosed early, it is harder to successfully treat. They may be going to clinics and other professions that don’t have the advanced technology to help with the cancer as other locations may have. There is also the fact that many African Americans lack transportation. They can’t get back and forth to treatment facilities with ease. They also suffer in the area of being able to afford ongoing medications as part of the treatment process.

The emotional toll that it can take on them is very different than from other groups of people, too. Many African Americans have the mindset that they aren’t worth saving. They continue to suffer as that is the way of life they have seen over and over again in their society. They don’t make an effort to help themselves because they feel the doors have been closed all around them.

Even with help available, patients may not comprehend where to get that help. There may be forms that they have to fill out and they may not get the necessary information completed in time. They may not follow the process and get denied for failure to provide all of the required documentation.

Many African Americans are unhappy with their lifestyle and so they don’t have the desire to improve it when they get cancer. They assume that they are bound by their poverty and it has integrated into their mental wellbeing. They don’t want to spend money they may have as they don’t want to leave their families behind with nothing left over. It is up to society as a whole to help bring down these barriers so that they get quality medical care for bowel cancer.

What Should You do When Your Eyes are Red? http://www.completerx.com/latest/1826 http://www.completerx.com/latest/1826#comments Tue, 01 Feb 2011 15:58:40 +0000 http://www.completerx.com/?p=1826 When your eyes are red, it is easy to feel self conscious about it. This appearance can alter the way you physically look to others which is embarrassing. Red eyes can also be irritating and so it is hard to focus. We use our vision all the time and often take it for granted. You don’t have to just suffer though with red eyes. Instead you can take a variety of actions to make them look and feel better.

When your eyes are red, then the problem is caused by blood vessels that are dilated. Most of the time, this isn’t a major concern. Yet there are other times when can be deemed as a medical emergency. If you have pain or you can’t see out of the eyes, then you need to seek immediate medical attention.

Not getting enough sleep is one of the most common reasons for your eyes being red. If you have been in an accident, then there can be trauma that can take several days to be reduced. You should still be checked out  by a specialist just to make sure that it isn’t anything serious.

When you are outdoors, often the wind and dry weather can cause your eyes to be red. If you have seasonal allergies, then your eyes could get red and itchy. There are many over the counter products such as eye drops and Antihistamines that can help. There are also salves that you can use if you wake up with a crusted type of material around the eyes.

Sometimes when your eyes are red there is a type of virus or bacteria present this can be a sign of pink eye. You do want to get it checked out as it can easily spread. In fact, children can pick up pink eye at day care or at school due to the sharing of germs around those types of facilities.

Another cause of red eye might be a type of infection called a sty in your eye that is a type of infection. You will need a topical antibiotic that you put on your eye lid. You should avoid makeup so that you don’t get the bacteria in there again. It could be that the cause of your red eyes is due to your cosmetics too. If you notice the redness when you use new products, you should stop using them immediately.

Various types of medications such as those for thinning the blood can cause your eyes to be red. This is just one of the many side effects so make sure you only use such medications as directed by your doctor. The use of illegal drugs can also cause your eyes to be red. It isn’t recommended to take such drugs, and if you need treatment there is plenty of help out there.

What To Do if You Suspect Your Child has Bipolar Disorder http://www.completerx.com/latest/1824 http://www.completerx.com/latest/1824#comments Tue, 01 Feb 2011 00:02:10 +0000 http://www.completerx.com/?p=1824 Bipolar disorder is a very serious mental health condition, and it can affect children as well. Many parents feel overwhelmed and helpless when they feel this problem could be affecting their child. You aren’t alone though as you will find plenty of types of help out there for such a problem.

First, you need to trust your instincts. Too often parents don’t want to label their children as bipolar or cause any panic. They worry that they may be wrong so they remain silent about it. Plus, there is such a stigma in our society about it that many parents are ashamed to seek help. They see it as a failure of their own skills as parents.

Getting your child evaluated by your medical professional is very important. There may be some underlying health problem that is triggering symptoms. For example, if your child is receiving ongoing medication for a health problems, that needs to be known. That medication may need to be changed or the dose reduced as part of any treatment plan for bipolar disorder.

Take your child in for a mental health evaluation with a professional. They can evaluate the situation and make a full diagnosis after the assessment has been done. A combination of ongoing counseling and medication may be necessary in order for the bipolar disorder to be controlled.

Parents need to get support and counseling themselves too when they feel their child may have bipolar disease. This can be through individual sessions, group therapy, and even joining online support groups. Learning all you can about bipolar disease is also important. You need to be able to determine what is normal behavior and what is due to the bipolar issue. If you feel they are at risk of hurting themselves never leave them alone.

Understanding what to watch for when your child is in a manic state is very important. There is the risk of them harming themselves or others during this period. Make sure your child knows you are there for them all the time. The way in which they handle the bipolar disorder also depends on how you convey your own feelings about it. Be careful though not to make this mental health disorder an excuse for poor choices your child makes.

They need to be responsible for their consequences and they need to know the rules. Establishing clear boundaries as well as a regular routine is very important. Consistency is something that has to be in place with bipolar disorder. Be patient with your child, be understanding about the mood changes, and do your best to encourage them to follow their treatment plan. With a good foundation and lots of support they can still live a good quality of life. There is no cure for bipolar disorder but it can be treated well.

The Emotional and Psychological Problems Fibromyalgia Brings http://www.completerx.com/latest/1822 http://www.completerx.com/latest/1822#comments Sun, 30 Jan 2011 21:50:26 +0000 http://www.completerx.com/?p=1822 There are both emotional and psychological problems with fibromyalgia that someone diagnosed with it needs to address. If you know someone with this health problem, you need to learn about them, too. Then you will be able to offer the very best possible support to them.

Studies show that women with fibromyalgia are more likely to suffer from emotional and psychological problems than those without it. These problems include depression, which can prevent them from enjoying a good quality of life. Anyone with depression can start to pull away from social activities and even be unable to work due to the pain they experience. They may have worries over finances and not being able to care for their family.

The emotional strain of fibromyalgia can result in thoughts of suicide. That is why support from family and friends is very important. There are also support groups, so connecting with people who are going through the same thing can be on your side. These support connections can be found through medical professionals or independently online.

Men can also suffer from fibromyalgia. They are more likely to try to hide their emotions, though. This can result in them retreating out of the public eye. It is important to keep such males integrated into society as much as possible. They need to enjoy social outings. They also need to be able to feel like they are providing for their families, and they need to have support just like women do.

Too often the focus with fibromyalgia has to do with only controlling the pain. The use of prescription medication is very common. However, the cost of the medication can be very expensive and that can lead to psychological stress. There are also other health problems that can be linked to fibromyalgia. This can significantly reduce the overall quality of life a person has.

Anxiety over many different elements of life, including the unknown and relating to the pain, can really affect a person on various levels. Therefore, the treatment for fibromyalgia should also include counseling, careful monitoring, and intervention when necessary.

There is an extremely high suicide rate among people with this type of health problem. It has led many to wonder if that is a side effect of some of the pain medications, but this hasn’t been confirmed. For many patients, the medications alone don’t do enough for the pain. Other treatments such as yoga, meditation, breathing techniques, and even acupuncture can help a person with this health problem be able to feel better both mentally and physically.

Living with fibromyalgia isn’t always easy, but you can take measures to ensure you have the very best overall quality of life possible. Do your best to keep your emotional concerns in check. Get professional help if you need it as well as gather plenty of support around you.

Home Treatments of the Croup in Children to Consider Along with Medication http://www.completerx.com/latest/1820 http://www.completerx.com/latest/1820#comments Sat, 29 Jan 2011 21:39:40 +0000 http://www.completerx.com/?p=1820 When a child has the croup, the first instinct of a parent may be to consider medication. However, it can be several days before you get into the doctor. The medications used to treat it can be expensive, too. Even with insurance there are co-pays and in many instances the medications aren’t even covered under a given insurance plan. There are also side effects your child may have to deal with when they take these forms of medications.

You don’t have to just let your child suffer from the croup, though. There are numerous home treatments that you can try out. They are easy to implement, cost effective, and can give your child almost instant relief. When your child has croup, they have an inflammation that needs to be addressed. There is usually a type of virus responsible for it and the use of antibiotics won’t be helpful at all if this is the case.

You can create a steam room in your bathroom for your child. Turn on the shower and allow the hot water to run. Shut the door so that the bathroom will steam up. Hold your child in that room for about 15 minutes in an upright position. They may get a bit uncomfortable so you can take off articles of their clothing to cool them down.

The use of a humidifier in the room where your child sleeps is a good idea for croup. It will allow the dry air to have more moisture in it. A humidifier can be turned on and off or left on all night long if you like. You can use just plain water if you like or you can use medicine that is specifically for a humidifier. Always make sure it is a clean machine, though, so that you don’t spread bacteria through the air your child breathes.

Try to prop your child up so that they can breath easier while sleeping. The addition of an extra pillow under their head can make a huge difference. For a baby you may have to recline yourself in a chair and allow them to sleep upright against you to help with their breathing.

If the home treatments you try for croup don’t help your child to overcome it completely within 5 days, you need to see your doctor for medication. Let them know what you have done and they can offer a medication that will be helpful. Steroids are the common type of medication given to reduce the inflammation and swelling. You can use it in addition to the use of the various home treatments.

There are some “don’ts” when treating croup. Never stick your fingers into the mouth of your child to try to help their airway. This can be very dangerous to them. Don’t give them cough syrup as this won’t help with croup. If your child is struggling to breathe, then get immediate medical treatment for them.

There are Medical and Lifestyle Treatments to Help You Deal with Ovarian Cancer http://www.completerx.com/latest/1818 http://www.completerx.com/latest/1818#comments Fri, 28 Jan 2011 21:31:30 +0000 http://www.completerx.com/?p=1818 Ovarian cancer is a serious health risk for women. Understanding what you can do to deal with it is very important. You can take steps with your medical treatment as well as your lifestyle choices to help improve your chances of a full recovery.

The emotional toll that ovarian cancer can take on a woman is very important. The journey is one that you CAN get through. Don’t take on the world on your own, though. Talk to your family and your friends about it. Let them be there to help you and to support you every step of the way.

Find qualified medical help to give you answers. You need to know what your ovarian cancer outlook is. Find out what stage the cancer is in, what treatments are offered, and what you can do to get moving in the right direction to aggressively fight the cancer. You don’t want it to spread.

Medications for ovarian cancer can affect everyone differently. You need to give them a try, though, to see what happens. This will allow you to continue to use medications that work and for your doctor to try new options if they don’t.

Your distress can prevent you from getting better. Try to find a cancer support group. You can find one locally or online with real people that know everything you are going through firsthand. They can help you to have a positive attitude and to help you through the rough patches.

Try to find techniques that will help you to relax. Yoga and breathing strategies can help when you are feeling overwhelmed. Find people that can drive you back and forth to appointments for medical treatment. You need to rest and shouldn’t be driving due to the stress it can cause your emotional wellbeing during such times.

You also need to get people to help you out at home. Women tend to think that they have to take care of it all. However, when you have ovarian cancer, you need help with the home. You can get help with your children, too. Focus on beating the cancer so that you can be there for your family 100% in the future.

You need to feel in control over the situation when you have ovarian cancer. Don’t avoid dealing with your feelings of fear, anger, or others that will occur. You are going to experience them all throughout the process. Try to relax as much as you can and to spend time doing what you enjoy. You want to avoid feeling depressed and stressed as much as you can.

Don’t allow financial stress to get in the way of adequate ovarian cancer treatment, either. If you don’t have insurance or you have high co-pays, there are many organizations that can help. Your family and friends can also help to set up fundraisers for you to give the people in your life the chance to help you fully recovery from your cancer.
